Search and rescue operations have shifted focus from finding survivors to recovering bodies, with at least eleven confirmed dead so far.

Authorities report that the route from Myanmar to Malaysia and Indonesia is frequently used by Rohingya fleeing persecution. The United Nations estimates that one in five migrants attempting this journey remain unaccounted for, highlighting the dangers faced by those crossing the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.

Off the coast of Malaysia's Langkawi island, ploughing through choppy waters in the hope of finding survivors. One of the many search teams involved in this extensive operation. But several days after the boat carrying migrants and asylum seekers capsized, realistically this is now becoming a search for the dead rather than the living. A number of bodies have been pulled from the water along with survivors, some identified as Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar. Preliminary investigations indicate that all the detained individuals are ethnic Rohingya from Myanmar and Bangladeshi nationals. They reported they boarded a wooden vessel from the Butodong area of Myanmar with around 300 people. The route from Myanmar down the coast of Thailand to Malaysia and Indonesia is a regular choice for members of the minority group described as one of the world's most persecuted seeking a better life. And the calmer seas that now prevail from November into next year are likely to see an increase in the number of newcomers risking the journey. Normally that was a trend based on the previous years. The incoming from Rohingya will start or commence in November, December, January and February, maybe due to the good weather and they feel that they can safely arrive. According to the UN, as many as one in five of all the migrants who have made the journey so far this year remain unaccounted for, possibly dead. It means the waters from the Bay of Bengal south through the Andaman Sea for migrant crossings are among some of the most dangerous in the world.
