Delhi residents cannot breathe easy. Every winter the air pollution in the Indian capital climbs to dangerous levels. And residents want the government to do something about it. They say they miss breathing clean air. It is so crucial to speak up because the air we breathe has become so polluted that living itself has become difficult. We keep hearing about plans to reduce pollution but it's only got worse over the years. Every government says they will do something but the only thing they are doing is manipulating the data. Nothing is happening other than that. From October onwards, a thick haze containing dangerous microparticles smothers the city. Delhi's air pollution problem stems from vehicle emissions, smoke from agricultural fires and dust from construction. It's exacerbated by the city's topography and a lack of wind in winter. Over the past two weeks, the pollution has reached hazardous levels multiple times, according to the Air Quality Index. It's recommended that Delhi's more than 30 million residents wear masks, do not exercise outdoors, keep windows closed at home and run air purifiers. We get severe coughs, often because of the polluted air and dust, especially when we travel in a two-wheeler. Irrespective of the masks, breathing becomes challenging in the open. We must wear masks for our own safety. Our eyes are also getting infected due to the pollution. Our eyes are burning because of this. While the local government has an action plan it says will tackle pollution, protesters accused politicians of inaction. Tensions on the issue are high, with dozens of people arrested and taken away in buses during the protest. Demonstrators hope the public display of frustration will lead to change and eventually clearer skies.
