Supiturang village in eastern Java has been left in ruins following the recent eruption of Mount Semeru. Residents managed to evacuate just in time as ash clouds and mud rapidly engulfed their homes, schools, and infrastructure. The area, classified as a red zone, prohibits residential use but allows farming due to the fertile volcanic soil.

Nearby villages also experienced severe destruction, with locals reporting that ash flows advanced half a kilometer in three minutes. As communities return, they are confronted with the task of rebuilding in the shadow of Java's tallest and most volatile volcano.

This is what's left of Supiturang village in eastern Java, a day after the Sumeru volcano erupted. Homes, schools and other infrastructure reduced to ruins. Villagers managed to evacuate in the nick of time. Everyone was running. We were running too. It was 4pm, but it felt like midnight. It was dark, very dark. There was lightning and rain coming from the west. It's not the first time they've had to do it. The village is just kilometers from the slopes of Mount Sumeru. Its last major eruption in December 2021 killed at least 51 people. But Sumeru's frequent eruptions also provide a benefit. The ash enriches the soil, an attraction for local farmers. This location is in a red zone. According to regulations, red zones are not authorized for residential use. However, we allow them to work here, because their fields are here, their buffalo and livestock are here. In another nearby village, hundreds of residents have taken stock of the devastation after they too were forced to flee by fast encroaching ash clouds and mud. Locals told reporters the flow advanced half a kilometer in just three minutes. Everyone here ran. We evacuated to safer places. In the evening, we checked back here and everything was gone. Time now for these communities to rebuild, in the shadow of Java's tallest and most volatile mountain.
