Shay was one of fewer than 200 Native Americans present on Omaha Beach during the invasion and spent his final years near the site of his heroism. He is remembered through a memorial on the beach and is survived by his children, grandchildren, and his community.

Of the 16.5 million Americans who served in World War II, tens of thousands are still among us, but we lose more every day. Here's one whose story is especially heroic. World War II veteran Charles Shea died today at his home in France's Normandy region. He was 101 years old. Shea spent his final years not far from where he became a hero decades ago. Shea grew up in the Penobscot Native American community in Maine. He was 19 when he was drafted into the Army and became a medic. On June 6, 1944, he landed on the shores of Omaha Beach, D-Day. In 2019, he spoke to CBS's Mark Phillips about what he saw that day. Many men that had been wounded were laying and could not help themselves. Shea pulled wounded soldiers from the water to safety, earning him the Silver Star for valor. I hope that I saved the lives of many men, but I would say 10 or 20, perhaps. Shea was one of fewer than 200 Native Americans on Omaha Beach that day. Now there's a memorial there celebrating his legacy. I believe that I can talk with the souls of the men that are still wandering around the beach here, and I just try to assure them that they are not forgotten. And Shea is survived by children, grandchildren, and a proud Native American community. We salute you, sir, and thank you for your service.
