Cricket in Rwanda has experienced remarkable growth over the past three decades, now boasting more than 50,000 regular players. Central to this development is Gahanga Stadium in Kigali, built with support from the UK charity Cricket Builds Hope and opened in 2017. The sport was reintroduced to Rwanda by citizens returning from exile after the 1994 genocide, and it has since become a prominent part of the country's athletic landscape.

Rwanda's women's cricket team has made notable progress, including victories over established teams like Zimbabwe and the West Indies in the U19 World Cup. The Gahanga Stadium has hosted more T20 internationals than any other venue globally, reflecting Rwanda's growing status in the cricket world. With coaching hubs in all five provinces and increasing youth participation, there are aspirations to professionalise cricket and see national teams compete at the World Cup level.

Cricket in Rwanda barely existed 30 years ago. It's now thriving with more than 50,000 regular players. At its centre is the Gahanga Stadium in the country's capital Kigali. Constructed with the backing of UK charity Cricket Builds Hope, it opened in 2017. Now having such beautiful cricket ground with an iconic structure behind me, so it's really something that I feel proud of and I really thank everyone who really contributed to making this dream a reality. Cricket only arrived in Rwanda after the 1994 genocide. Brought back to the country by Rwandans who'd grown up in exile in neighbouring countries where the game is played. Rwanda has now become a cricketing power in its own right. Rwanda's women's team is really making its presence felt in the global game. At the U19 World Cup two years ago, they beat established cricketing nations Zimbabwe and the West Indies. This stadium has really become a hub for the game in Africa. It has hosted more T20 internationals than any other venue in the world. Murikatete Belisse has played in many of those 100-plus international games. Having starred for the U19 team, she's hoping to lift the senior women's side to similar heights. What about appearing in a World Cup? Do you think that's possible for Rwanda? Yeah, it's possible, but we still have a long way to go. But we are still fighting because we don't want to give up because we have everything we need and we wish and we hope we will get there soon. Players from all over the country are involved in trying to hit that target. There are coaching hubs in each of Rwanda's five provinces. It's a way of life. Kids have started playing from primary school. The hopes are getting bigger and better. My biggest dream is to see the game professionalised in the country and it employs more people and then probably see the national teams play the World Cup and be among the top. A place alongside world cricket's best now looks a realistic ambition for Rwanda's cricket teams.
