The deadliest police operation in Brazil's history killed at least 119 people, authorities said on Wednesday, as Rio de Janeiro residents lined a street with dozens of corpses found overnight, a week ahead of global climate events in the city.

A large-scale police operation in Rio de Janeiro's Pinha Favela has resulted in at least 119 deaths, with public defenders suggesting the toll could reach 132. The raid, which targeted a major drug gang and was planned over two months, is now considered the deadliest in Brazil's history. 

Rio's governor defended the operation as a necessary step against crime, while some residents and relatives of victims accused police of excessive force and killing innocent people. The timing of the raid, shortly before global events related to the United Nations' COP30 climate summit, and the lack of federal government involvement have added to the controversy.

Rio de Janeiro is taking the lead, not in the sense of doing it alone, but in the sense of understanding its role and recognizing that the epicenter of this problem plaguing Brazil is Rio de Janeiro, and that we will not shy away from doing our part. Yesterday, we delivered a hard blow to crime, showing that we are capable of winning battles, capable of playing our part, but we also have the humility and certainty to recognize that this war will not be won alone. But some accused the police of carrying out a massacre. Beatriz Nelaccio is an aunt of one of those killed in the operation. I hope the state does what it must. Yes, there should be operations, but not suicidal ones. The operation is necessary. It's the state's duty, the police's duty to fight drug trafficking, not to enter the favela and kill innocent residents. The latest raids come about a week before Rio is set to host global events related to the United Nations' COP30 climate summit. According to Rio's justice minister, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was surprised to learn Rio police had launched such an extremely bloody and violent operation without notifying or involving the federal government.
