M Health Fairview and United Healthcare are engaged in contract negotiations that, if unresolved, could result in M Health Fairview becoming an out-of-network provider for United Healthcare and UMR plans beginning January 1, 2026. The dispute affects approximately 125,000 patients, many of whom have received notifications about potential changes to their coverage.

M Health Fairview argues that United Healthcare's contract terms would force them to cut services and limit access, while United Healthcare claims Fairview is seeking a 23% price increase, raising costs by $121 million for local employers. The current five-year contract between the two organizations is set to expire at the end of the year.

News tonight for some patients of M Health Fairview. We are learning that M Health Fairview and United Healthcare Insurance are butting heads over contract negotiations for 2026. If an agreement is not reached, M Health Fairview would become an out of network provider starting in January. Fox nine's Leon Purvis joins us from the newsroom tonight. And Leon, what are both sides saying about this? Well, Karen, this will impact 125,000 patients. Some of you may have received a letter about your coverage at M Health Fairview in the letter. It says, in part, if we do not reach an agreement with you H C M Health Fairview will be an out of network provider for you H C and you M R plans beginning January 1st, 2026. So why are the two companies at odds? M Health Fairview sent Fox nine a statement that reads in part. Unfortunately, United Healthcare's current commercial contract demands would force Fairview to make impossible choices. Cutting services, limiting access, impacting our ability to deliver fully on our promise to our patients and communities. United Healthcare sent us a statement that reads in part Fairview is demanding a more than 23% price hike for our commercial plans that would make it significantly more expensive than any health system in the Twin Cities. Fairview's proposal would increase health care costs by approximately $121 million, which would come out of the operating budgets of local employers. Now, one attorney explains to us why there's so much head bumping when it comes to the bottom line. What we're dealing with here is providers are in a pinch with regard to the advancements in health care that costs money. Uh, insurers and third party administrators such as United Healthcare are in a pinch. Employers are in a significant pinch. They're the ones who are going to end up paying it when you talk about commercial insurance. And of course, the employees, the employee who is also a patient is being targeted by both Fairview and United at this point in time is to trying to get support for their position. So why all this back and forth? Now, a spokesperson from M Health Fairview says its commercial contract with United Healthcare is a five year agreement that ends this year live in the newsroom.
