Authorities, including President Gustavo Petro, have attributed the attacks to dissidents of the defunct FARC guerrilla group. The incidents come amid a rise in violence linked to armed groups, with the United Nations reporting that approximately 183,000 people were affected by confinement and forced displacement in the previous year.

The target of the car bomb was a military aviation school, but the deadly explosion ripped through a busy city street in Cali, Colombia's third largest city. I was inside an office when I heard the explosion. We were all thrown to the floor and we managed to get out as best we could. It came just hours after another fatal attack further north when a drone was used to down a police helicopter. That incident occurred as the police were overseeing the eradication of coca crops, the leaves of which are the main ingredient in cocaine. It's unclear if the two attacks are linked. The country's president, Gustavo Petro, attributes them to dissidents of the defunct revolutionary armed forces of Colombia, commonly known as FARC, Colombia's largest guerrilla group. It's not the same thing to engage in combat where both groups are armed, as it is to kill unarmed civilians. What happened in Cali is an act that spread panic among the civilian population, killing them systematically. There has been a surge in violence in Colombia in recent years. This is mostly due to conflict among the country's armed groups. Around 183,000 people were victims of confinement and forced internal displacement last year, according to the UN.
