The Town of Cochrane rededicated the refurbished ‘Men of Vision’ statue by the late sculptor Mac MacKenzie, honouring his legacy after last year’s vandalism.

Cochrane has held a rededication ceremony for the ‘Men of Vision’ statue after it was restored due to vandalism that damaged the horse’s legs. The bronze statue, created by Mac MacKenzie and installed in 1979, commemorates Alberta’s pioneers and settlers and is located on the historic Senator Cochrane ranch site. The restoration followed an incident where vandals used a grinder to nearly sever the horse's legs. Town officials and family members of those involved in the statue’s creation emphasized its importance to the community’s heritage and the commitment to preserving it for future generations.

Making their way on horseback, Judy MacKenzie and Wendy Hawes-Copperthorn are taking part in a special day for their families. A rededication of the bronze Men of Vision statue sculpted by MacKenzie's husband Mac and installed in Cochrane back in 1979. An initiative spearheaded by Clarence Copperthorn the provincial minister of highways and transport at the time. I just think it's great because it's part of our heritage and it was done. Wendy's dad Clarence said it's for Alberta for the pioneers and the settlers of Alberta. There was a few artists that put in sculptures and I don't know if dad was the one that actually picked Mac's committee. So it was nice that it stayed in the community. The artist stayed in the community. Just months after the statue was unveiled it was included in a tour of the town. Calgary historian Jack Peach gave the CBC. Depicts a typical cattleman of the west. It's on the site of the old Senator Cochrane ranch where really Cochrane had its beginnings. About 45 years later the statue was targeted by vandals. The legs of the horse cut almost all the way through by a grinder last May. Mayor Geoff Genong says restoring it was never a question. When people think about Cochrane they know of this image of this statue and so yes it's a huge opportunity to be able to tell the story of why it's here, what it means and why we're preserving it.
