The event is highly controlled, with the general public barred from attending and extensive security measures enforced along the parade route, including lockdowns and barriers.

Preparations for the parade have included visible rehearsals, military aircraft flyovers, and the transport of tanks into the capital. The parade is set to pass by President Xi Jinping and invited dignitaries, such as Russia's Vladimir Putin, while the public remains at a distance. The event is designed to project an image of unity and control, with authorities aiming to manage both the event and its public perception.

China's military parade: Behind the curtain

On Wednesday, China's Communist Party will hold a military parade like this one, broadcast on state TV in 2015, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in the Pacific. But the general public isn't allowed to go. The CNBC Bureau overlooks Hong Kong Avenue, which is the primary parade route. So in theory, we could watch the celebrations from here. But the government won't allow it. The building authorities have told us to keep the windows shut and not to be in the office during the event. Why throw a party and not let everyone join? On TV, party authorities want the public to see the party firmly in control. They're worried that, you know, there are discontented people in China. And something might go wrong. And they want to, at all costs, prevent that from happening. They're worried about the impact that it might have on the perceptions that it's giving to Chinese citizens. But it's been hard to hide the extensive preparations. Rehearsals have gone on since early August. Fighter jets have flown overhead. Helicopters hover in formation. Even tanks have been caught on camera, transported into the capital. The main parade route is heavily patrolled. More than six square miles, four times the size of New York's Central Park, are under lockdown. Everyone's preparing for a rehearsal right now. But this is the path of the parade that's going to fly past President Xi Jinping at Tiananmen Square. Russia's Vladimir Putin, party dignitaries and other hand-picked people will be there, too. On China's Victory Day, the closest anyone from the public will be is at least a street away. Barriers have been set up even further. Some fences for traffic painted in rainbow colors to make the controls feel more festive. Looking at the parade itself, you really are just going to see a stage-managed performance of total control. For many observers at home, you're going to look at that and think, wow, everything in China is just perfect. It's conveying a false impression of the reality of China, which, of course, in some ways is what Beijing really wants.
