Hundreds of Chilean and Argentine football fans were detained following violent clashes during a club knockout match in Buenos Aires. The altercation involved weapons such as knives, sticks, and improvised objects, leading to the cancellation of the match and continued violence outside the stadium. 

Argentine police reported that the conflict began when Universidad de Chile fans threw objects from the upper stands, prompting retaliation from Independiente supporters. Nineteen Chilean citizens were hospitalized, including one with stab wounds. The South American football governing body, Conmebol, has launched an investigation and promised strict sanctions.

Outside a police station in Buenos Aires on Thursday, friends and family members sought information about the hundreds of Chilean and Argentine football fans in custody after fighting with knives, sticks, sun grenades and bathroom fittings during the previous night's club knockout match. Early in the morning, I heard the news from Universidad de Chile fans, and then I came and asked about my son. They told me, yes, he was here and he was fine, but they won't let me talk to him. According to Argentine police, the incident began when Universidad de Chile fans, located in the upper stands, tore up seats in the stadium's restrooms and threw blunt objects towards the lower section, where the Argentine Independiente fans were located. Fans jumped or fell from the upper deck of the stands to escape the attack. The match was canceled at the start of the second half, but the violence did not end, as Independiente supporters broke down doors to attack the Chilean fans with sticks and metal bars. Police did not intervene to control the violence, arguing that they hung back in order to prevent greater damage. The Chilean government said 19 of its citizens had been hospitalized, including one with stab wounds, in some of the worst sporting violence South America has seen in years. I want to be very clear, nothing, absolutely nothing justifies a lynching like the one yesterday. Football is a celebration and it must remain one. We don't want it to be taken over by a small group of people who ruined the celebration's family friendliness. South American football governing body, Conmebol, said it was investigating the incident, and vowed to mete out firm sanctions.
