Chad is facing an escalating crisis as severe drought and water shortages impact both local populations and Sudanese refugees. Refugees like Maasina Bakar, who fled Sudan two years ago, have been forced to relocate multiple times due to worsening conditions and lack of water. Humanitarian organizations have intervened to provide water purification, but the scarcity of resources has fueled tensions and sometimes violence between Chadian hosts and refugees.

Efforts to maintain peace have included dividing water resources between communities, but competition remains intense. In early November, clashes over access to a water well in central Chad resulted in thirty deaths, underscoring the severity of the crisis and the urgent need for sustainable solutions.

It's been two years since Maasina Bakar fled Sudan, her home country, to Chad. Here she has already moved twice due to increasingly frequent and severe droughts. This farmland really lacks water. There isn't enough rain here. The seeds don't grow properly. You can see how yellow everything is. At our previous location, we already struggled with water shortages. They were even worse than here. People had to walk dozens of kilometers to town to fetch water. The Secours Islamique France, one of the NGOs operating here, provides these young people with a water purifier to turn the water they pump from the well into drinkable water. But the shortage of this essential resource fuels tensions, sometimes violent ones, between the Chadian host population and Sudanese refugees. The lack of water and the scarcity of aid cause problems for Chadians in this region. But as they control its distribution, they often refuse to let us access it. So we have to go elsewhere to look for water. To keep the peace between local communities and Sudanese refugees, humanitarian actors have to compromise. When we came to build water wells, pump clean water and supply it to the refugee camp, the local Chadian community strongly disagreed. They said we were only thinking about Sudanese refugees and not about them. So we divided the water, one part for the local community and the other for the refugees. In early November, clashes broke out between two Chadian communities over access to a water well in central Chad. Thirty people were killed.
