A Royal Canadian Air Force crew flying over the East China Sea is tracking North Korean vessels accused of violating U.N. sanctions — while facing aggressive encounters from Chinese fighter jets.

A Canadian military patrol aircraft conducted a mission over the East China Sea to enforce United Nations sanctions against North Korea. The operation, known as Operation Neon, involved searching for North Korean vessels suspected of transporting oil, weapons, and other prohibited goods.

During the mission, the Canadian aircraft was intercepted twice by Chinese fighter jets while operating in international airspace. The Chinese jets flew close to the Canadian plane, with one instance bringing the aircraft within 200 feet of each other. Despite these encounters, the Canadian crew continued their intelligence-gathering mission and completed it safely.

A Canadian military aircraft is on the hunt, searching for North Korean vessels carrying oil, weapons and other illicit goods. What are you carrying? In violation of UN sanctions. There's definitely some boats that look more suspicious than others. Operation Neon flies in international airspace over international waters. But Chinese territory is close by, triggering this response. We're in the process of being intercepted. In the distance, a Chinese supersonic fighter jet appears. It is just a short distance from the wing. Unhappy with our presence, the Chinese pilot hails the Canadian captain who clearly states the Aurora's mission. I'm a Canadian aircraft operating in international airspace with due regard to the rights and duties of all nations. There is no verbal reply from the Chinese, just further acts of intimidation. We can still see that Chinese fighter jet. It is just off the wing. And they've been shadowing us now for the last 20 to 30 minutes. The Chinese certainly want us to know they are watching. As long as things remain professional and safe, the mission continues unabated. The jet disappears. But this is a game of cat and mouse. And a few hours later, a second intercept occurs. It's just on our tail. Less than 200 feet, in fact. The closest a Chinese fighter jet had come or mission. It can add some stressors, of course. Sometimes we're trying to maneuver, but we try to mitigate it as best we can and keep the aircraft safe. After nine hours of intelligence gathering, it's mission complete, under the most testing of circumstances.
