Maurice Kamto, a prominent opposition leader and head of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC), has been officially confirmed as a candidate in Cameroon's upcoming presidential election. Despite earlier suggestions from the Interior Minister that his candidacy could be rejected, Kamto filed his candidacy in accordance with national electoral law.

In a significant development, Kamto will not represent his long-time party, the MRC, but will instead run as the official candidate of Manidem, the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy, within the opposition coalition. This change was first announced by Manidem's leader and later confirmed through official documents.

In a dramatic turn of events ahead of Cameroon's 2025 presidential election, opposition leader Maurice Camteau's candidacy has been officially confirmed, despite looming threats of invalidation. Camteau, a professor of public law and head of Cameroon Renaissance Movement, MRC, had long been expected to run. However, his campaign hit turbulence on July 16 when Interior Minister suggested Camteau's candidacy could be rejected during a high-level meeting with regional governors. The minister's warning added fuel to speculation of political interference and raising concerns about electoral fairness. But Camteau had defied the pressure. On July 15, he officially fired his candidacy at a police station in Yaoundé, in accordance with Article 123 of Cameroon's electoral code. What's more surprising, Camteau would not represent the MRC, his long-time political vehicle. Instead, he is now the official candidate of Manidem, the African movement of new independence and democracy within the opposition coalition. The announcement was first entered by Manidem's leader and later confirmed through leaked document and legal filings.
