One family, who had lived in the building for 26 years, was dramatically rescued from the roof by firefighters and has since been living in their cars while awaiting official assistance.

Community efforts, including a GoFundMe campaign and support from local schools, have provided essential aid such as clothing, supplies, and food. The Red Cross is now assisting the family after a notice to vacate was posted, and the family expressed gratitude for the support as they hope to return to normalcy.

We were stuck on that roof calling our families saying our last goodbyes thinking that we was going to die. That was back on the 3rd. Since then the family says while waiting for an official notice to vacate they've been living in their cars as this is what their apartment of 26 years was reduced to. You can see the fire escape they fled through now scorched. We're allowed to come back but as of right now it's not livable. They say a community GoFundMe raising thousands of dollars has been a lifeline especially for their young children. Thank you to all the schools on 71, 68, thank you for helping us. They actually helped us more than the Red Cross and HPD. They gave us a lot of coats because a lot of us went in sweaters. They gave us supplies, they gave us food. They say after a week of uncertainty there is finally a notice to vacate order in front of their building and they're being taken care of by the Red Cross. They say they can't even be in there for more than a few minutes before the painful memories and the harmful smells come back. Everything gone and even though you could replace that we was almost gone. We almost died. The family says they hope their kids can return to school here and one day return home.
