The operation aims to enforce Title 8 immigration laws, with agents stating they will remain in the city until their mission is accomplished.

The increased federal presence has received support from Louisiana politicians, including the governor, but has also caused fear and frustration among local residents. Community members and immigration attorneys report a surge in calls for legal advice, with some residents expressing concerns about detentions during routine activities and students avoiding school due to fear of enforcement actions.

To Louisiana now, where the streets of New Orleans brace for a surge in Border Patrol agents. An immigration enforcement crackdown begins today, with plans to send roughly 200 federal agents to New Orleans. Leading the operation, Greg Bovino, the same man behind federal crackdowns in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Charlotte, North Carolina. CBS News reporter Katie Weiss joining us live from New Orleans now, and Katie, you actually talked to Greg Bovino. What did he say? Well, good evening, Juliette. Yes, I just so happened to see him walking down the popular Canal Street in the major tourist area of the French Quarter of New Orleans. And so I immediately just got out my phone and started talking with him to ask him about the progress of his operation. Take a listen. How many people did you detain today? Still counting a lot and still counting. How long do you plan to be here? That is a fantastic question. Till the mission's accomplished. What is the ultimate mission? Title 8 immigration enforcement. What brought you to the Big Easy? All cities are on target, and this is just another one of those. How many other agents do you have out here with you? We've got several hundred agents spread across the New Orleans area, so not just us. We've got a lot. And he also told our photographer that he is here with his crew to keep everyone safe. Juliette. Wow. Great interview. Way to catch him while he was on the go there and he answered your questions. How was the community reacting to the federal presence in New Orleans? Sure. Well, you know, major politicians, including the Louisiana governor, are very glad to see him here. However, many local community members are scared and frustrated by their presence. In fact, some people have been recording Bovino's operations earlier today, recording how some of his crew was even up on a roof trying to detain some people while they were on construction jobs. And I even spoke with an attorney from the local Tulane Law School Clinic, Immigration Law Clinic, and she said that she's been flooded with calls from their clients asking for advice on how to handle situations where they are to come in contact with federal agents. Take a listen to what she had to say. People are just really scared regardless of what their immigration status is. They're worried about being stopped by officials. They're worried about people being arrested. So, you know, I've gotten calls from teachers who are worried because their students don't want to show up to school. And another immigration attorney here in town also tells us that some of his clients were arrested and detained when they went in for just a regular check-in, and also that several other clients, new clients, have been reaching out to his office over the last few days, booking up his whole schedule with new client intakes, people just trying to be proactive and get ahead of this if in case they are to come in contact with these agents.
