The Climate Council has released new analysis recommending that Australia cut its emissions by 75% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2035 to help keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius. The report warns that failure to act could result in severe consequences, including the loss of up to 90% of coral reefs at 2 degrees of warming, increased uninsurability of homes, more frequent and intense heatwaves, and the loss of critical habitats.

If global temperatures rise to 3 degrees, the analysis predicts even more extreme outcomes, such as the complete disappearance of coral reefs, a doubling of extreme fire days, and temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne. Coastal areas, including parts of Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast, and Western Australia, are identified as being at high risk of regular flooding by 2050.

If you want to throw yourself over a cliff for no purpose then this is a great way to do it. We're the 15th biggest polluter in the world. We're one of the biggest exporters of fossil fuels. And we're one of the countries with the most to lose. We've already reached 1.3 degrees of warming. But at 2 degrees, up to 90% of coral reefs disappear. More homes become uninsurable. Heatwaves become more intense and frequent. And critical habitats are lost forever. Now picture 3 degrees. Coral reefs vanish. Extreme fire days double. Heatwaves last a third of the year in Queensland. And temperatures top 50 degrees in Sydney and Melbourne. We would lose our way of life. Not to mention the melting ice sheets exposing the not-so-sunny side of seaside living. By 2050, areas around Sydney Airport are among those predicted to face regular flooding. Melbourne's Docklands could also be inundated. Gold Coast beaches are in the red zone. Same as those living in Adelaide's northern suburbs. And this stretch of WA's Pilbara and Kimberley coasts is also at risk. Some communities will not be able to live in those places anymore.
