French prosecutors are investigating after a masked gang attempted to kidnap the daughter of a crypto businessman in Paris in what is at least the third violent attack targeting wealthy crypto players and their families in recent months.

A woman and her young son were the targets of an attempted kidnapping on a street in Paris, according to eyewitness accounts and statements from local business owners. The assailants, described as men wearing ski masks, tried to force the woman into a delivery van, dragging her along the sidewalk. During the struggle, the woman managed to disarm one of her attackers by throwing away his gun.

Passers-by intervened, including an individual who used a fire extinguisher to help stop the assault, prompting the kidnappers to flee the scene in their vehicle. The woman’s spouse, who was present, was injured while intervening and reportedly sustained a fractured skull. Both the woman and her son took refuge in a nearby café, where they received first aid from witnesses and emergency responders.

Paris police are investigating the incident and considering the possibility that it is linked to a series of similar attacks targeting individuals connected to the cryptocurrency sector. Authorities noted that approximately ten such violent incidents, typically involving kidnappings and ransom demands, have been recorded in France within the past year. In a recent comparable case, the father of a cryptocurrency entrepreneur was abducted in Paris; during his captivity, his finger was severed and a ransom was demanded before police rescued him.

I saw a man on the ground covered in blood, so as a health professional, I gave first aid very quickly. He was badly injured, his skull had been fractured. The woman was accompanied by her young son, says a café owner who knows the couple well. They took refuge in his café, just minutes after the assault. She was with the firefighters, receiving first aid along with her son. Her husband was outside. Investigators from Paris' police force are looking into this violent attack. They're exploring the possibility that this attempted kidnapping is linked to others in the cryptocurrency world. Attacks like this one are on the rise in France, with 10 or so in the past year, each with a similar modus operandi. A kidnapping in the street, followed by a demand for money. Just over a week ago, the father of a crypto entrepreneur was rescued by police after being abducted in the streets of Paris. In the nearly 48 hours he was missing, his kidnapper severed his finger and demanded a ransom from his son.
