If you'll be traveling to visit family or friends this Thanksgiving, storms could cause issues in a few different parts of the U.S. AccuWeather's Anna Azallion has the details.

A significant weather system, including an atmospheric river, is forecast to affect large portions of the United States during the Thanksgiving travel period. The Southern Plains, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest are expected to experience storms, snow, and heavy rain, leading to potential delays at airports and on roadways.

Travelers are advised to monitor airline notifications and adjust plans where possible, as the worst conditions are expected from Tuesday night through Thursday. Flash flooding, high winds, and heavy traffic are anticipated to cause disruptions, especially in major cities such as Dallas, Austin, Louisville, Memphis, and Little Rock.

Atmospheric river to impact Thanksgiving travel plans

Let's talk about the weather that might slow you down and unfortunately there's quite a bit of it. So starting out we have that stormy start in the South, especially the Southern Plains. That's what Jeff was just talking about. But then into the Northern Plains, the Midwest, we're going to get cold enough. We see some snow, thunderstorms and showers in between. Then we take a look at the Pacific Northwest. Now we start out the week and the weekend with a storm. Then Tuesday night through Thursday and atmospheric River, which is just really coming at the worst time because that of course is going to lead to some trouble at the airports and on the roads. But let's break it down day by day, starting with your Monday. Here's our issues that Jeff was talking about that storm causing problems in Dallas and Austin. If you're heading to any of those airports or driving through, make sure you allow yourself some extra time and just in general. If you're flying next week, make sure you have the app for your airline downloaded. You want to have your push notifications on because you'll be alerted as soon as there's a delay. Typically it sends you a push notification. It's one of those things if you don't travel a lot, you might not. Think of it, but can really help you out with some of the issues we're going to run into take a closer look at the storms. Now one thing to note on future radar here because we are so far out, it's not going to give you the most precise look at where the precipitation is going to be down to the mile. That type of situation, but it gives you the big picture of the storms and you can check back as we go a little bit closer. Get more of that pinpoint information for your forecast. So we have the storms that start out in the Southern Plains, but just like the current round, they're going to move north and east as we go throughout your Monday here. We're up into the Northern Plains. We get cold enough. You see some of that snow, especially into the Dakotas. Then the rain it moves into the Northeast. It moves into the Southeast as we go through Tuesday and here's our atmospheric River moving in and causing problems for the Pacific Northwest, especially as we go throughout our Wednesday. So again, day by day Tuesday. Might be your best day Monday, Tuesday in the Pacific Northwest might be your best travel day. So if you're able to alter your plans a bit, you might be able to get some of those plans a bit. Might be the best idea now. It's not going to be a good day in place like Louisville, Memphis, Little Rock down into northern Louisiana. That's where we have the poor travel conditions. Expect delays here. No matter if you're driving or flying, here's a better look at your atmospheric River. The biggest concerns here are going to be flash flooding and then the winds that is going to cause issues at the airport, even if the planes are doing OK with the rain. When we get wind over a certain threshold, it just leads to delays. Now one thing to note if you're driving through the mountain passes, you're pretty much good to go. You have to deal with some rain, but won't have to deal with the snow. Wednesday, a lot of fair conditions, but in a lot of high traffic areas. So expect delays Wednesday as well.
