Framing it as a great new era in fighting narco-terrorism, Rio's state governor Claudio Castro dismissed accusations that non-gang members were also killed. If there's any error in classification, it's residual, which is insignificant, he said. The governor wants to build himself, it's tough on crime. Gabriel Frenari, an expert in Brazil's drug trade, says Castro faces re-election as the effectiveness of the raid is being questioned. What we know so far of the people who were killed is that they were mostly foot soldiers. Brazil's federal justice minister called the raid extremely bloody and violent saying his government wasn't informed. Human rights groups quick to condemn it as indiscriminate. Brazil must break the cycle of extreme brutality. After previous raids, gangs bounced back. This time, Red Command responded with armed drones, killing at least four police officers. Still in a country where many are tired of the gangs, there is some appetite for this. We have a lot of people that support this kind of policy, this public policy. The dead still being sorted.
