The pharma giant AstraZeneca has requested that the European authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine be pulled, according to the EU medicines regulator.

AstraZeneca has formally requested to have its COVID-19 vaccine, Vaxzevria, withdrawn from the European market, a decision approved by the European Union's medicines regulator. This move comes nearly four years after the vaccine was first administered and following the distribution of over 3 billion doses worldwide. AstraZeneca cited the availability of newer vaccines, designed to target the evolving variants of the virus, as the primary reason for its withdrawal.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, which was first administered in Coventry in 2020, quickly became a pivotal tool in the global fight against COVID-19. Authored by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in January 2021, it was the third most utilized vaccine globally. Despite its widespread use, concerns emerged in 2021 about a rare possible side effect involving blood clotting conditions. However, the EMA assessed that these concerns did not significantly increase the overall risk of clots. Even amid these challenges, AstraZeneca managed to sell almost $4 billion worth of the vaccine in 2021.

In addition to the withdrawal, AstraZeneca is currently engaged in a legal case in the UK High Court, with 51 individuals claiming to have been adversely affected by the vaccine's side effects. The vaccine, initially developed to combat the original strain of the coronavirus that originated in Wuhan in 2020, has been overtaken by the emergence of newer variants, particularly those of the Omicron lineage, prompting this recent decision by the pharmaceutical company.

In a statement, the pharmaceutical giant said the decision was made due to a surplus of newer vaccines adapted to target Covid-19 variants. They will withdraw as much as they possibly can, given the fact that we know that that vaccine which was generated against the original version of the virus, the Wuhan virus that swept across the world in 2020, things have moved on, the virus has mutated multiple times and we're now in the era of these so-called Omicron variants. The shot, renamed Vaxseveria, saw some concerns about its safety, with the discovery of a possible, though rare, blood clotting condition as a side effect in 2021. Whilst some countries suspended the vaccine's use, the EMA concluded that this didn't raise the overall risk of clots, and the company overcame these setbacks to sell almost four billion dollars of its vaccine the same year. AstraZeneca is facing a legal case in the UK High Court on behalf of 51 people, claiming to have been affected by the side effects.
