Nineteen people have been arrested after they protested the arrival of an Israeli flagged cargo ship at Sydney's Port Botany. NSW Police were filmed clashing with pro-Palestinian demonstrators during the incident.

Nineteen individuals were arrested in Sydney during a protest against an Israeli-flagged cargo ship's arrival at Port Botany. The demonstration was clearly aimed at expressing opposition to the vessel's presence, underscoring tensions surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict. It was reported that the New South Wales (NSW) Police were involved in confrontations with the pro-Palestinian protesters during the event.



Arrests at protest targeting Israel-owned container ship

There were some pretty intense scenes here at Port Botany last night. Protesters broke out into tussles with police officers. They were here protesting against the Israeli Zim shipping line after a cargo ship belonging to the company docked here at Port Botany yesterday. So at around 9.30pm the protesters moved to block the main roadway and entry into the port. Police had given them a direction to move on. Many of those people disobeyed those directions and then that resulted in the arrests of 19 people including some pretty high profile members of the Australian Maritime Union. Now amongst the protesters were also people from the Palestine Justice Movement and the Trade Unionists for Palestine group too. They were calling for the Australian Government to exclude the Israeli Zim shipping line from all Australian ports and as well as implement more sanctions on Israel amid this ongoing war in Gaza. Now one of the members of the Trade Unionists for Palestine spoke to the media last night about why they were protesting. Here's what they had to say. Zim being the oldest Israeli shipping line, it's a prime target. Zim have also actually said that they're completely at the service of the Israeli Government through this savage war and their two top managers used to be commanders of the Israeli Navy so they've got blood on their hands absolutely and people are here to send that message. This isn't the first time that protesters have been here at Port Botany protesting against the Israeli Zim shipping line. Back in November 23 people were arrested in a similar protest action against the shipping company.

King Charles will return to his public duties next week for the first time since his February cancer diagnosis, visiting a cancer treatment centre. There fears his Australian trip will be delayed, while he continues treatment for his own cancer battle.
