The protest has drawn support from trade unions, patients' families, and concerned citizens, who argue that the spending cuts are endangering public health services. While the government maintains the cuts are necessary to address inflation and have received backing from international financial institutions, demonstrators warn that the measures are putting lives at risk.

The Garrahan Hospital treats more than 600,000 patients a year, many of them with complicated conditions. Children suffering from cancer come from all over Argentina and elsewhere in South America. The hospital often their last, their greatest hope. It has human qualities and is very professional. It's tremendous what the hospital does. We can't let it be lost. Her grandson, Dayan, was diagnosed with cancer when he was three. The cancer has returned but his family is confident that with the care and treatment of staff at the Garrahan, he'll pull through. He was in intensive care for 25 days, the most critical patient, and the Garrahan brought him back to me. I've still got him. Staff at the hospital say their wages don't meet basic needs and many doctors have left to work abroad or for the private sector, that they don't have the medicines or equipment they need to do their jobs. We are worried that we'll lose this kind of hospital that we love, that we believe the country needs, that paediatric care needs. Trade unions, patients' families and citizens concerned about the state of Argentina's public services join the protest. First the teachers and lecturers marched, then it was the turn of pensioners, now it's doctors and other medical staff, all saying that President Javier Mele's stringent cuts to public spending have gone too far, are putting lives at risk. The president says the cuts are necessary to control Argentina's rampant inflation, but his measures, backed by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, are working. Earlier this week he urged what he called good Argentinians to celebrate, while the rest could cry.
