CNBC's Steve Kovach reports on news regarding Apple's COO stepping down.

Apple has announced that chief operating officer Jeff Williams will step down from his role at the end of the month, with Sabih Khan, the current executive in charge of operations, named as his successor. Williams will remain at Apple until the end of the year, continuing to oversee the company's design and health divisions, including the Apple Watch, before formally retiring.

This leadership change marks the second departure from CEO Tim Cook's senior team in the past year, following CFO Luca Maestri's step down from his role, though Maestri continues to manage Apple's facilities teams. The company described Williams' departure as part of a long-planned succession, and the transition comes as Apple adjusts its supply chain in response to tariffs, presenting new challenges for the incoming COO.

So what's going on is Apple COO Jeff Williams, he's going to be stepping down from his role at the end of this month and replacing him is Sabih Khan. He's currently the executive in charge of operations. That's the job Williams once held and even CEO Tim Cook held once upon a time. Williams is staying at Apple though until the end of the year. That's when he will formally retire and leave the company. And in the meantime, he's going to continue to run Apple's design team and health division. That includes things like the Apple watch. Those teams though, they're going to report back to CEO Tim Cook after Williams leaves the company at the end of the year. This is also the second member of Cook's senior leadership team to step down within the past year. That was CFO Luca Maestri. He stepped down from his role at the end of 2024, but he's still sticking around at Apple and running facilities teams. Now Williams was once viewed as a top candidate to succeed Cook as CEO, but Apple says in yesterday's announcement that this is part of what it's calling a long plan succession. So Williams is out of the running for that CEO gig for now. And also he's leaving as Apple reorients its supply chain to mitigate president Trump's tariffs. That's going to be a big challenge for this new COO guys.
