Tuesday marks the start of one of the biggest online shopping events of the year: Amazon Prime Day. Nathan Burrow, senior deals editor for Wirecutter, joins CBS News to round up some of the best promotions.

Amazon Prime Day, one of the largest online shopping events, is expanding from two to four days and will feature themed deals each day. Early discounts are already available on Apple products such as watches and AirTags, and further deals are expected on items like kitchen appliances, personal grooming products, and skin care.

While tariffs are affecting prices for some categories, including baby gear and large appliances, most products remain unaffected. Shoppers are encouraged to compare prices across various retailers, as many are offering competitive discounts during the event. With the extended timeframe, consumers have more opportunity to make thoughtful purchasing decisions and avoid impulse buys.

Amazon Prime Day deals to look for

Well, tomorrow marks the start of one of the biggest online shopping events of the year, Amazon Prime Day. This Prime Day is going to be a little different than in years past, because instead of two days, it will now last four. It will also feature themed deals each day, so your credit card can get ready for that. According to Forbes, the global event is expected to drive nearly $24 billion in online sales in the U.S. alone. That is a lot of money. Nathan Burrow joins us now. He's the senior deals editor of Wirecutter, the product recommendation service from The New York Times. I'm so excited to talk to you about this, Nathan, because I have all these things I've been waiting to buy. What are some of the best deals available, you think, during Prime Day this year? Well, we're anticipating deals across product categories, but one of the things that we're really happy to see is some early Apple deals have already begun. The Prime Day deals started early. They often do. So we're already seeing deals on Apple watches. We're seeing deals on AirTags, but we also anticipate seeing deals on skin care that Wirecutter recommends, small kitchen appliances, personal grooming stuff like toothbrushes. So we're really thinking that we're going to see deals across categories, but there are some things to potentially avoid. While they may be well discounted, you might be able to get more for your money later. That is interesting. What about tariffs? How do you see tariffs impacting prices for this? Well, my team tracked the prices of 40 Wirecutter picks over 60 days as part of a recent piece that we did at Wirecutter, and what we found was that tariffs were only impacting a portion of the products that we cover. And so it seems like there is kind of a wait and see happening with retailers where it's a waiting game. So we want to be the first to raise prices on products. And also there's so much uncertainty that certain products aren't going up yet. What we did find was that tariffs were impacting a couple categories in particular that Wirecutter covers. One was our baby and kid year, so strollers, car seats. Also some large appliances were impacted. And I also noted in looking at preliminary Prime Day coverage that we're seeing some other items like we have a crafting section, our sewing machine pick has gone up. Our kids' bike helmets have gone up in price. And so it is affecting product pricing, but not across the board. Do you have any tips that shoppers can follow to get the best deals this week? Number one, comparison shop. The great thing about this being a four-day event is that Amazon isn't going to be the only one who's offering great prices. There are a bunch of other retailers from Walmart to Best Buy to Target to even some manufacturers who are offering discounts over the same window. And so you really have the opportunity to shop where you want to shop and take advantage of bargains where you can find them. It's also a great opportunity to stay patient. Four days, as you mentioned, is twice as long as previous Prime Day events. And so you have time to sort of think things over and not make any hasty sort of impulse buys. Do your due diligence and make sure you're getting great stuff. Easier said than done. Whenever I see something, I'm like, oh, let's click, let's click, and let's buy.
