A two-week youth curfew is underway in Alice Springs following recent unrest in the town, following an 'emergency situation' declaration by the Chief Minister. Anyone under 18 out between 6am and 6pm will be arrested and taken to a 'safe place'.

Alice Springs has initiated a two-week youth curfew in response to recent unrest in the community. This was prompted by an emergency situation declaration by the Chief Minister. According to the new measure, individuals under the age of 18 found outside between the hours of 6am and 6pm will be arrested and taken to a designated "safe place."

Reports from police initially are that it was business as usual across the evening in Alice Springs as the curfew from 6pm to 6am came into place for all children under 18 who don't have what the police have described as a genuine reason to be in the CBD. Now they've said there were a few incidents across the broader region of Alice Springs that they had to respond to but actually in the CBD itself they were very pleased with the work of both frontline services including the Tunganjia Night Patrol as part of the broader work that that frontline organisation the Tunganjia Council does in the youth space, in the education space, in the health space and indeed police saying that it's going to take a lot more than just more police in Alice Springs to solve many of the issues that face this community. I suppose as we've heard from the Mayor not long ago, Matt Patterson here in Alice Springs, he acknowledges that though we had an incident this week that was particularly bad, it was not the only bad incident that's happened in and around the town and that there are going to need to be a long term view for the problems that are coming. Here's Matt Patterson. Clearly the community's fed up, clearly we wanted some change and so this is a 14 day reprieve for the community. I just think people need to understand what we've gone through and drastic decisions such as curfews and the Chief Minister calling emergencies don't just happen after one incident. This is a back to back to back several months and years of destruction and damage in our community. Miles, take us through what prompted these restrictions. So Dan, these restrictions themselves were off the back of a particularly violent incident in the Alice Springs CBD and then in the east of Alice Springs at a town camp and they came after a funeral and ceremony for a young 18 year old man who died a fortnight ago in a car crash in what was an allegedly stolen car where there were about nine people inside the car, police say, and when it crashed this young man had died. Now many people came from outside of Alice Springs as well to the town as part of the ceremony. It was a peaceful one. Both the Mayor had said as much, police have said as much, I witnessed a bit of it just on my commute home and it was one that went off without a hitch. But it was in the hours after where there were problems, indeed there was an incident at a popular pub in town, the Todd Tavern, where patrons were locked in the venue to protect them from people throwing rocks, bricks, fly kicking windows. And then later in the night a particularly concerning incident at the Hidden Valley town camp in east Alice Springs where police say about 150 people were involved in this wide ranging fight where a car was set on fire, about 50 weapons were seized and even yesterday talking about that incident and that flare up, the Police Commissioner Michael Murphy says that yet again that these issues are very much a symptom of very deep rooted issues that will take a long time to fix and that while this 14 day curfew is in place to help in an initial response to bring calm, that they want to take a long term view to bringing safety, peace and thriving for the town of Alice Springs.
