The deal, reached following weeks of negotiations and a formal strike notice, provides wage increases of 12 to 24 percent over four years for union members, including licensed practical nurses and health care aides.

While the agreement addresses wages, the union expressed dissatisfaction with unresolved issues around short staffing, citing a persistent 12 percent vacancy rate. Union members are expected to vote on the agreement later in the month, and regular hospital care is anticipated to resume across Alberta.

Hospital workers were prepped and ready. Union members were set to strike at 8.30 a.m. local time but only minutes into this picket line it was over. A tentative agreement had been reached. The union gave strike notice on Wednesday after weeks of failed negotiations with Alberta's government. They were at the bargaining table well into the night and the AUPE says a deal came through one minute before official strike action was set to start. Hospital care should be going back to normal here in Alberta but it could have been a very big disruption in what Albertans can expect from hospital workers. The 16,000 members of this union include workers such as licensed practical nurses, LPNs and health care aides. The province said that it did have contingency plans if this strike were to have continued. The union said some of those plans included cancelling elective surgeries. The province didn't confirm that but the union said that that is how badly these workers were needed. Wages were the main issue at the bargaining table. In the end, the union says members will get a 12 to 24 percent increase over four years depending on the specific job. For example, licensed practical nurses will get the 24 percent increase but the union says they aren't fully satisfied with the deal. Beyond wages, another key negotiating point was short staffing which it says was not solved with this latest agreement. We need for them to have a real and a realistic human resource strategy that addresses a short staffing. You know, this short staffing is not going to go away. We still have a 12 percent vacancy rate and those are the things that we continue to push for and work on. The premier acknowledged that during her province-wide radio show. I'm sure that there'll be some additional type of work that we need to do with all of our units to make sure that they've got the best workplace conditions possible. Union members are set to vote on the agreement later this month. Because there has been a tentative agreement reached that should mean that Albertans can expect regular hospital care.
