The reforms have now been divided into two separate bills: one focusing on tougher gun control, including a gun buy-back scheme, and another addressing hate crimes and migration, with the most contentious racial vilification elements removed.

The changes put pressure on the Coalition to clarify its position and consider re-entering negotiations. The opposition maintains that the bill is flawed and claims it was not given an opportunity to provide input. The revised bills are scheduled to be introduced to Parliament.

Well, his hand was essentially forced, Georgie, because the Greens rejected the bill, and he needed them after the Coalition had backed away, calling this legislation unsalvageable. So there was a political reality Anthony Albanese had to deal with. He didn't have the numbers for these reforms to pass Parliament, and what he's done is split the bill into two, because the Greens had indicated they're willing to back tougher gun control measures that were part of this legislation. So that will go through as a separate bill and include a gun buy-back scheme, which is a win for the Prime Minister. And he's pressing ahead with laws on hate crimes and migration in a separate bill, and stripping from that what were the most contentious elements, racial vilification laws that included a new offence for inciting racial hatred. By doing so, the Prime Minister is putting the ball back into the Coalition's court to see if they are willing to negotiate again. The Coalition need to come up with what their position is, because at the moment they're defined by what they're against, but it's not clear what they're for. Georgia, the opposition maintains this bill is deeply flawed and they haven't been given an opportunity to provide input into it. These bills will be introduced to Parliament on Tuesday.
