Albanese raised concerns directly with the Chinese side, emphasizing the need for transparency and respect for international rules in the region. 

The summit also covered significant trade discussions, including Australia's new critical minerals deal with the US aimed at reducing reliance on China. US President Donald Trump participated in the summit, overseeing a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand and engaging in trade negotiations with China. The event marked the first meeting between Albanese and Japan's new Prime Minister, highlighting ongoing efforts to promote stability and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific.

I hope our two countries can spearhead efforts so we can forge a free and open Pacific. Oh Sandra, of course everything President Trump does is on the world stage and has definitely generated a lot more interest in the ASEAN summit than it would normally get given President Trump's attendance, the attention he's giving the region and the meeting. China claims it has reached a basic consensus with the US on trade ahead of that meeting between the Presidents in South Korea. That meeting will have global implications including for Australia of course. Anthony Albanese is managing the relationship between our closest ally and biggest trading partner.
