There is growing attention being paid to the number of people under the age of 50 being diagnosed with cancer in the United States.

An increasing number of Americans under 50 are being diagnosed with late-stage cancers, including colorectal, breast, prostate, uterine, stomach, and pancreatic cancers. Studies predict a 31 percent global rise in cancer cases for this age group between 2019 and 2030. 

Medical professionals are unsure of the exact causes, but theories include rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and possible changes in dietary or environmental exposures. Survivors and doctors emphasize the importance of self-advocacy and early detection, as more young people face cancer diagnoses worldwide.

It's still nothing that you ever prepare for. For Allison Solomon, walking with a sprained ankle seems easy after her recent treatment for stage 3 colon cancer last year. She was 37 years old with no family history of the disease when the symptoms started showing up. She demanded her doctor order a colonoscopy and then went through surgery to remove part of her colon, followed by chemotherapy. I was taking pills, chemotherapy pills at home and I tell people I was taking about 70 pills a week because I also had to take medication to manage all of the side effects. Allison is part of a growing number of people under the age of 50 being diagnosed with cancer and it's a global problem. One study predicts cancer will increase in that age group by 31 percent globally from 2019 to 2030. Studies show six cancers are increasing the most, breast, prostate, uterine, stomach, pancreatic and colorectal. The kind of cancer that brought Allison to Dr. Benjamin Weinberg, who says they don't know why so many young people are being diagnosed with cancer. There's a variety of theories, so some of them have to do with these co-occurring epidemics of obesity and diabetes. We know folks who are obese have a higher risk of developing things like colorectal cancer. Part of our interest and a lot of other people's interest is looking at certain exposures. Was there some change of some sort of dietary or environmental exposure? After months of grueling treatment, Allison is in remission, telling her story to spread the message worldwide. You need to advocate for your body and you know it best. A lesson, unfortunately, doctors say more and more people under 50 are now learning every single day around the world.
