The mission involves hundreds of volunteers from over 40 countries and aims to deliver humanitarian assistance to the enclave, where the UN has warned of famine.

The flotilla seeks to break the Israeli naval blockade that has been in place since 2007. Israeli authorities dispute the UN's famine warnings and claim that aid deliveries have been hijacked by Hamas. Previous attempts to deliver aid by sea have been intercepted by Israeli forces, including a recent incident involving Thunberg herself.

Final touches are being made to this boat in Spain, one of dozens preparing to set sail for Gaza as part of the global Summoned for Tila. Summoned means perseverance in Arabic and that's exactly what activists here are looking to demonstrate. Among them Swedish climate and human rights activist Greta Thunberg. The 22-year-old is undeterred even after being detained by Israeli forces and deported in June during her first attempt to deliver aid by sea. I'm not scared of being detained, what I'm scared of is how rapidly the world is slipping in further into fascism and racist ideologies, further into oppression, inequalities. This vessel is part of what's being called the largest aid flotilla yet bound for Gaza with hundreds of volunteers from more than 40 countries on board. The mission comes as the UN warns of famine in parts of the enclave. The flotilla aims to break the naval blockade Israel has enforced since 2007. Thunberg says governments around the world are ignoring their legal and moral obligations. It should not have to be up to us, a mission like this should not have to exist. It is the responsibility of countries, of our governments and elected officials to act, to try to uphold international law, to prevent war crimes, to prevent genocide. That is their legal duty to do and they are failing to do so and thereby betraying Palestinians but also all of humanity. Israel which halted aid into Gaza for nearly three months earlier this year disputes the UN's famine warnings. Officials say they've allowed trucks through but accuse Hamas of hijacking deliveries. Similar efforts over the summer by the Freedom Flotilla coalition saw a Gaza-bound boat in July. It was also intercepted by the Israelis in international waters.
