Drought, forced returns, and reduced aid are combining to create what experts describe as a "perfect storm" for Afghanistan.

The ensuing clerical crackdown left over 2,500 dead. Samiullah said his family lost almost everything overnight when they were deported. Iranian authorities raided their home, arrested them, and sent them back to Afghanistan. We live here out of necessity and hardship. Whatever is within our power, we will do. Our hearts long for many things, but we simply cannot afford them. When the wind and rain come, we hold our children close and keep going because we have no choice. The children cry that it's cold, but what can we do? We endure because we have to. Reuters was unable to reach authorities in Iran for comment. Tehran ramped up deportations last year amid a flurry of accusations that people were spying for Israel. Authorities blamed the expulsions on concerns about security and resources.
