The government has released a report detailing the technology options for age verification, including document checks, biometric scans, and analysis of user interactions and browsing data. 

While the report notes that no method is perfect and false negatives are likely, it also highlights systems to detect forged documents and VPN use. Cyber security experts have raised concerns about the potential misuse of personal data and risks of data breaches. Further details on compliance expectations for technology companies are expected to be announced by the Federal Government and the eSafety Commissioner.

100 days till under-16 social media ban takes effect

Calendar reminder, it's now 100 days until the social media age ban starts. It's exciting isn't it? Under 16s may not share the sentiment, but as the clock ticks, the communications ministers release the full findings of a trial into the technology needed. Age assurance can be private, efficient and effective. There are three methods for platforms to check if a user is over 16, verifying official documents such as a passport or birth certificate, estimating by scanning faces and hands, and inferring age through browsing history, data and interactions. A particular platform can tell that you're talking to 65-year-olds about caravanning or you're talking to 13-year-olds about K-pop demon hunters. Yeah that's... Probably not a massive fan of that. I'm for it if it's for the 16-year-olds being off social media, but I think it depends on how the data is stored. The report says there are systems to detect forged documents, deepfakes and VPNs which were largely unsuccessful during the US's temporary TikTok ban, but there's no perfect option. False negatives will then be inevitable and alternative methods will be required to correct them. I think it's a huge trust exercise. Cyber security experts warn the greatest risk in actively handing over personal information is... Misuse and repurposing of information that we provide for other means. The second greatest risk is theft or loss from a data hack. We should finally get a better idea on how this is all going to work later this month when the Federal Government and eSafety Commissioner outlined their expectations on steps Big Tech needs to take to comply with the new laws. They use the data that we give them for a bevy of commercial purposes. I think it is reasonable to ask them to use that same data and tech to keep kids safe online.
