Home to some of Australia's most cherished chocolate, Cadbury's factory in Melbourne's east is set to produce over 430 million Easter eggs this year, accompanied by 14 million chocolate bunnies. As the factory emphasizes the importance of quality, consumers this year have witnessed a noticeable change in both the weight and cost of these products. A packet of hollow Easter eggs has reduced from 24 to 22 eggs, yet the price has risen from $12.50 to $15. 

Chocolate producers like Daryl Lee, Coco Black, and Aldi have encountered similar price increases or reduced product sizes, commonly referred to as shrinkflation. The main factor driving these changes is the escalating climate issues in Ghana and the Ivory Coast, which together provide more than 60% of the world's cocoa. Cocoa prices reached new highs of $12,000 a tonne, a dramatic increase from their 2023 levels. While manufacturers strive to absorb these costs, some inevitably pass onto consumers.

Notwithstanding these challenges, confectionery retailers expect robust sales this season. Over 17 million Australians are anticipated to spend in excess of $2 billion on Easter chocolates and other treats, with demand showing no signs of abating. Manufacturers continue producing vast quantities of Easter goodies, forecasting strong consumer engagement.
