American journalist Shelly Kittleson was kidnapped in broad daylight in central Baghdad by Kataib Hezbollah, a militant group backed by Iran, according to Iraqi authorities. Video footage shows her being forced into a vehicle, and although authorities attempted a rescue and arrested a suspect, Kittleson was not found.

Editors had been in contact with Kittleson just hours before her abduction, during which she expressed concerns for her safety due to her American identity. A hostage negotiator highlighted the importance of the first 24 hours for a potential breakthrough, and her journalist community remains focused on securing her safe return.
