Save the Children says that 2 in 5 children in Yemen are not going to school because of conflict. That's the equivalent of 4.5 million children across the country. With a declining economy, many of them have no choice but to try and find work to help support their families.

In Yemen, a significant number of children are unable to attend school due to the ongoing conflict within the country. According to the international non-profit organization Save the Children, approximately two out of every five children in Yemen are not receiving an education. This situation has resulted in around 4.5 million children across the nation being out of school.

The crisis is further compounded by a declining economy, forcing many of these children into the labor market. Without access to education, they find themselves with no alternative but to seek work in an effort to contribute financially to their struggling families. This phenomenon underscores the dire socio-economic conditions faced by families in Yemen amid the conflict.



Yemen: Around 4.5 million children out of school

It takes courage for nine-year-old Rabab to attend school in the city of Lahij in southwestern Yemen. Many of her classmates stopped coming last month after two children were killed when a discarded artillery shell exploded. The explosion was violent and close to our homes. It's the first time we've heard such an explosion. We used to feel safe, but not anymore. We're scared of stepping on something like a bomb that might explode. Fear has taken over us. I get anxious when the teacher isn't around. Save the Children says there are around 4.5 million children who aren't in school in Yemen. Lack of security is just one reason. More than 85% of Yemenis live in poverty. A near-decade-long war has forced many parents to take their children out of school so they can work and help ease the financial pressures that millions of families face every day. My classmates quit studying to support their families financially, to assist their fathers since things have got more challenging economically. Many of them left to work on farms. Hani knows better than most the value of a good education, but his teacher's salary doesn't cover his family's basic needs. He's had to make some difficult decisions. I have four daughters. I took two of them out of school. My salary is $46 a month, which isn't enough these days due to the current high prices and health care expenses. Out of the whole salary, the student fees take 25%. A UN-brokered truce officially ended in October 2022, but still largely holds. But Save the Children says without an official ceasefire, Yemenis don't have the stability they need to rebuild their lives, and an entire generation risks being left behind, with long-term consequences for Yemen's recovery and development.
