Elite track and field athletes from around the world congregated in Edmonton on Sunday for an international invitational track meet. CBC’s Sam Brooks was there to take in all the action.

The Edmonton Athletics Invitational drew 126 athletes from 22 countries to the University of Alberta's Foot Field for a major international track and field competition. The event, part of the World Athletics Silver Continental Tour, offered participants the opportunity to earn international ranking points and increase their visibility on the global stage.

Organizers highlighted the high caliber of the field, with over 30 Olympic, Paralympic, and World Championship-level athletes in attendance. Athletes praised the quality of the facilities and the atmosphere in Edmonton. The event, now in its fourth year in this format, is also expected to generate significant economic benefits for the city, particularly in hospitality and accommodations.

World-class track and field athletes bring competition to Edmonton

Some top-tier track and field action is going on here at Foot Field on the University of Alberta campus. 22 countries are represented by 126 athletes competing here at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational. The Invitational is a stop on the World Athletics Silver Continental Tour. It provides athletes a chance to earn international ranking points and increase visibility. For event organizers the level of competition doesn't get much better than this. We have over 30 Olympic and Paralympic and World Championship level athletes that are here. Last time we had 120 athletes 35 of them went on to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. In addition to the fierce competition there seems to be a consensus among athletes that Edmonton is a great place for a track meet. Each year that we come here it's like amazing track it's just great atmosphere and everything so yeah but the facility is great it's awesome. It went great it was smooth I mean I was in lane two got out my second half was beautiful felt good calm just a great atmosphere overall glad to be here. For Bailey it's just another chapter in the city's history of elite athletics competition. We have a rich history of hosting track and field events going all the way back to the 2001 World Championships and we're at Commonwealth Stadium. This is the fourth year for this variation of the this event. According to organizers the event is expected to generate about 1.1 million dollars for Edmonton's economy mostly from hospitality and accommodations as these current and future sports stars take in all that our city has to offer.
