The comments come just days after the Minnesota Lynx star forward injured her ankle in the playoffs on a controversial play that was not called a foul. But the sentiment had been building since last season, amid allegations that physical play and poor officiating were leading to injuries across the league. Collier also said during a private conversation with Commissioner Kathy Engelbert, she asked Engelbert why the league's young stars, including Angel Reese, Paige Beckers and Kaitlyn Clark, are not being paid what they deserve. Her response was, Kaitlyn should be grateful she makes $60 million off the court, because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn't make anything. Engelbert responded Tuesday, saying, quote, I am disheartened by how Nafisa characterized our conversations and league leadership, but even when our perspectives differ, my commitment to the players and to this work will not waver. I think a lot of people across teams, players, executives, agents, believe and feel the same way that Nafisa Collier did in her comments. She is already one of the best players in the league, but I think she rose her platform, she rose her stature even more by what she said.
