Will Macron’s plan for minimum prices ease farming crisis?

Faced with anger from farmers that's been mounting for weeks, Emmanuel Macron has floated the plan of setting a minimum, or floor price, below which food manufacturers and retailers cannot buy and then sell. This minimum price would comprise all the production costs, such as for animal feed, vet bills and fuel. It's what France's second largest agricultural union has long been calling for. It's the cost of production, to cover our charges, pay our suppliers, but it's also remuneration for our work. We shouldn't work for free, I think everyone can understand that. And we know how to do it, we've already defined the production costs for milk, with everyone along the production chain. The policy would apply to agricultural commodities like milk, sheep and beef meat, a sector that's traditionally been more agnostic to the idea. They fear that supermarkets and industry could conspire to make the price floor become a ceiling for farmers' incomes. Or that it would work against them, faced with competition from the rest of the European Union. Most of the trade of French agricultural products is between France and other EU countries. And so we don't want the introduction of minimum prices to result in a call for more imported products that would be cheaper. France therefore is calling for a new law at the French and European levels.
