Parts of Queensland are bracing for more rain and flooding after a freak storm triggered flash flooding leaving streets submerged and businesses inundated. Several people had to be rescued after floodwaters cut off Kingaroy and Hervey Bay.

The town of Kingaroy in Queensland experienced a severe and unprecedented deluge, with rainfall reaching 120 millimetres in a matter of hours. The intensity of the downpour led to significant flooding, submerging the town and converting a shopping centre car park into a pool of water. Catching symbolic fish in the submerged areas exemplifies the extent of the flooding, reminiscent of previous disasters affecting the region such as the 2022 flood.

The latest storm has caused considerable damage, with some residents now needing to start road repairs from scratch. Swamped streets demanded prompt decision-making, although some residents found themselves in peril due to rash choices. Notably, three individuals required rescue from their vehicles and campsites, which had become surrounded by rising waters.

The impact of the flood has disrupted daily life, with some residents having to forgo New Year celebrations in order to deal with the aftermath. Among the losses were shed-stored decorations for various holidays, which were destroyed by the water. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant due to potential minor flood releases from Wyvern Hoe Dam. As scattered heavy rainfall could continue, there's a risk of flash flooding and riverine rises in the coming days.

Which some quickly came to regret. There's people trapped. Further north, three people had to be rescued before sunrise this morning from cars and campsites surrounded by the rising tide. This is our neighbour's yard that's currently almost shinhied. New Year plans scrapped to clean up. Our shed went under, so we've lost all of our Christmas and Halloween and Easter decorations. Residents have been warned not to let their guard down yet. Minor flood releases are possible for Wyvern Hoe Dam and it could be a wet start to 2025. Over the next few days, we could still see pockets of those heavy falls and that could lead to both a flash flooding risk and, again, renewed riverine rises as well. Tiani Reid for 10 News First.
