Palestinians are struggling to receive aid in Gaza even after the first phase of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas takes effect.

A ceasefire agreement in Gaza was expected to allow a substantial increase in humanitarian aid, with plans for 600 trucks of supplies to enter daily. However, much of the aid remains stalled at the border, with 190,000 metric tons reportedly waiting to enter. Israeli authorities have threatened to block some shipments, citing concerns over the return of Israeli hostages by Hamas. Aid agencies are calling for more entry points and faster clearances, while the closure of the Rafah crossing has forced all Egyptian aid to pass through Israeli security checks. 

The United Nations and aid groups are implementing measures to distribute supplies more safely and effectively, including closed trucks and targeted nutritional support for vulnerable populations. Despite the ceasefire, experts warn that famine conditions persist in parts of Gaza, and the humanitarian crisis continues, with the UN emphasizing that an agreement alone does not resolve the underlying issues.

Why isn’t aid flooding into Gaza after ceasefire deal?

There is hope that the ceasefire could lead to Gaza being flooded with aid. So why hasn't that happened yet? Under the deal, 600 trucks are supposed to go in every day, packed with things like food, formula, tents, medical supplies and even prosthetic limbs. But some of those supplies are just sitting there. We've got 190,000 metric tons on those borders ready to go in. Israel has threatened to block some of the aid because it accuses Hamas of not trying hard enough to return the Israeli hostages. Aid agencies say Israel needs to allow more trucks in and open more crossings for them. The Rafa crossing is closed, so trucks from Egypt have to go through Israel for security clearances before going to Gaza. There have been cases of desperate people swarming trucks, but aid agencies say that has dropped sharply recently because more aid is being handed out. To mitigate that, we use closed trucks, not open back flatbed trucks. We also have megaphones communicating that these are life-saving supplies for children. Part of the UN's plan includes giving nutritional supplies to a quarter of all Gazans. That's about 500,000 people. They also plan to provide cash to 200,000 families to help them buy food because prices at the markets can fluctuate widely. Experts say part of Gaza has been gripped by famine, something that Israel disputes. But the UN says just because there's a ceasefire doesn't mean people aren't at risk of starvation. What a ceasefire doesn't do is stop the humanitarian crisis. A signature on an agreement does not end a famine, and trauma does not just disappear overnight.
