The World Health Organization (WHO) has carried out the first medical evacuations from the Gaza Strip since a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was implemented. The operation is part of WHO's plan to increase medical support in Gaza over the 60 days following the ceasefire, including collaboration with the Palestinian Red Crescent to establish a medical hub.

So far, 41 critically ill patients have been evacuated, but approximately 15,000 people in Gaza are still waiting for approval to receive medical care outside the territory. Medical groups and local sources report that hundreds have died while awaiting evacuation, with WHO stating that 740 people, including 137 children, have died since July of the previous year.

For the first time since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect on 10 October, the World Health Organization has been able to evacuate patients from Gaza. Many civilians in the territory suffer from heavy injuries related to the war. Others cannot get the treatment they need for conditions such as heart disease or cancer. This is the first medical evacuation happening since the implementation of the ceasefire on the last 10th of October. As part of the WHO operational plan for Gaza during the 60 days following the ceasefire, we are committed to scale up our capacity to assist and support and coordinate medical evacuations, including the setup of the medical hub in close collaboration with the Palestinian Red Crescent." 41 critical patients have been evacuated so far, but around 15,000 people in Gaza are currently waiting for approval to receive medical care outside the territory. Hundreds have died waiting for evacuations when they were not allowed, medical groups and Palestinians in the Hamas-ruled enclave say. The WHO, which took over management of the process last year, said 740 people, including 137 children on the list, have died since July of last year.

Israeli planes and tanks pounded areas in eastern Gaza on Thursday (October 30), Palestinian residents and witnesses said, a day after Israel said it remained committed to a U.S.-backed ceasefire despite launching more lethal bombardments in the territory.
