UBS Senior Equity Research Analyst Erika Najarian addressed the recent strong performance of banks and suggested that, while money center banks have outperformed for two consecutive years, conditions may now favor a rotation into regional banks. Najarian cited factors such as expected loan growth, the lifting of leverage lending limits, and a steep yield curve as key drivers for regional banks in 2026.

She also noted that while large banks remain strong amid robust capital markets and a loose regulatory environment, risks such as potential market corrections and high valuations persist. Najarian anticipates increased capital markets activity and believes both money center and regional banks could benefit, particularly in the first half of the year.

Joining us now, UBS Senior Equity Research Analyst, Erika Najarian. Erika, your group's having quite a move here. Can it continue? I think the bar's pretty high, but I do think it could continue. Look, that would mean that the banks would outperform the S&P for three years in a row. And that hasn't happened outside of a cyclical recovery since the mid-1990s. So what happened then in order to make that happen? Right. We had better loan growth. We had a steep yield curve and we had a pretty vigorous M&A cycle. And if those preconditions are going to be in place for 26, which we think it can, we do think it's still, you know, it's a little bit too early to get off the money center train. But we do think it's time to rotate into some regional banks. You do. OK, why? So a couple of things. Number one, so loan growth is a big impetus for the regional banks. And we have evidence that direct loan growth is going to start coming back. So you have the provisions from the big beautiful bill and you also have these leverage lending limits that have been in place for nearly 12 years that were lifted by the regulators in 2000 or December of 2025. And so we think that's going to reinvigorate some loan growth, which is a big regional bank catalyst. Number two, a steep curve is typically better for regional bank margins than it is even for money center banks. And of course, a return of M&A will obviously ignite interest in regionals. Well, all right, let's go back to the big banks for a moment. Again, to your point, two years of outperformance and looking very strong right now. Potentially 26 brings lower interest rates, continue this loose regulatory environment, let's call it, for lack of a better term, and capital markets that would appear pretty robust, not to mention an M&A environment. What am I missing? What's on the other side of those positive arguments? So, look, I think that's why we think it's too early. Obviously, the other side of that is, have we sort of, how do I say this, gotten too much support from the Fed? Are the markets too high? Is there sort of a crash coming? If we're continuing to stimulate the economy and stimulate capital markets activity, that's clearly a big question on the other side of this. But for now, especially with credit quality quiet, we're not only going to see a pickup in capital markets activity, we could really see a renaissance of sort, especially in the first half of the year. So for now, especially relative to the broad market, I think the money centers could still have fuel yet left in their tank.
