As we hit the halfway point of 2025, AccuWeather's Tony Laubach breaks down the busiest states for tornadoes so far this year.

Tornado activity in the United States has been notably higher than average in 2025, with nearly 1,300 tornado reports recorded by the halfway point of the year. Texas has been the most active state, with almost 150 tornado reports, followed by high numbers in Missouri, Illinois, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. 

The traditional Tornado Alley in the Central Plains has seen a resurgence in activity, and the number of tornadoes reported so far already exceeds the total for the previous year. While no EF5 tornadoes have been recorded, several EF4 tornadoes have occurred across various states. The tornado season is expected to continue, especially with the onset of the tropical and hurricane season.

Where have the most active spots for tornadoes been so far in 2025?

It's been above the average pace for reported tornadoes as well this year. Yeah, I could the meteorologist and storm chaser Tony Loback. He joins us live right now from northern Colorado to break down which states have been the hotspots so far this year, Tony. Well, and we're talking more traditional areas this year. We kind of talked about the reinvigoration, especially over the last couple of years of the traditional Tornado Alley. The Central Plains. We kind of talk about states like Texas, Texas being the hotspots for tornadoes, and that has been the case in a couple of those states. But we are certainly well above the historical average in terms of the number of reported tornadoes to the point this year. In fact, let's show you that map. You see a lot of colors on the map right now and you see that total there at 1296. Now this isn't completely all tornadoes. These are tornado reports, so make sure you get that right. A lot of these are still being confirmed in some areas, but that is a good indication of just how many we've seen 1296. But look at where the hotspots are. There in the Midwest we see Missouri and Illinois up along the top Mississippi. Also over 100 reports for the year. They have typically been at the top of the list the last couple of years, but Texas is the biggie for the year. Right now we've seen almost 150 tornado reports in the state of Texas alone, but look at the rest of the map. There are 60 some in Oklahoma. You get into Kansas and Nebraska. You see again Tornado Alley kind of coming back to life will show you some of those tornadoes. This has been an active year for me. Chasing as well as I've been pretty much pretty much going all across the country, tracking storms all the way from as far east as Pennsylvania as far north as the Dakotas and as far South as Texas, which has seen again the most tornadoes so far this year amongst all the rest of the states the number of reported tornadoes almost 1300 exceeds what we saw all of last year and we're only halfway done with the season. Now the typical tornado season we talk about going from kind of mid into June and then we start to lull as we get into the summer, but there'll be areas where we'll see increased tornado potential. That's going to include tropical systems that make landfall in the US. Those typically have some tornado potential with them as well, and then we get the occasional one off event here and there between July and August, and then maybe a secondary season into fall. So very likely we're going to see those numbers continue to grow and we'll see where we come to rest by the time the season ends. Really, it's going to be those early 2000 teens where we saw some of the higher numbers. Those are going to be the ones that we are certainly going to be competing with. Still have not seen any EF fives. That is good news. That is the strongest. A tornado can be rated right now, but we have seen a few of the EF4 variety across pretty much various states. We've seen several of those throughout the year, so it has been a very, very busy year for tornadoes for sure. And again, kind of more typical than what we've seen the last few years where it's been like early and late season. This year it has been primarily that mid March to June time frame, and June certainly ended with some incredible tornadoes up in the Dakotas. Absolutely did there, Tony. We appreciate all that you do here. I know that the chase season is not over for you, but it begins to look a little different as we get deeper into the tropical and hurricane season.
