A federal judge has temporarily halted President Trump's executive order that sought to end birthright citizenship in the United States. The ruling comes as part of a class action lawsuit representing children who would be affected by the policy, specifically those born to undocumented immigrants or individuals on temporary visas.

The judge's decision, which has the same effect as a nationwide injunction, is currently stayed for seven days to allow the Justice Department to appeal. The case follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that limited, but did not eliminate, the ability of federal judges to issue nationwide orders in class action cases. The outcome of this legal challenge could have significant implications for an estimated quarter of a million babies born annually in the U.S. to undocumented or temporary visa holders.

All right. Welcome back, everyone. The White House is vowing to fight a federal judge's decision to temporarily block President Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship. Now, the judge signed off on a class-action lawsuit that includes all children who would be affected. CBS News immigration and politics reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez can break this all down for us. He's joining us from Chicago today. Good morning, Camilo. So, last month, the Supreme Court limited the power of district judges to block nationwide orders. So, with that in mind, can you explain what this decision means for the future of birthright citizenship? Good morning, Errol. Yes. While the U.S. Supreme Court narrowed the ability for federal judges to block nationwide policies from the executive branch, it also left the door open, importantly, to nationwide rulings from federal district court judges based on class-action lawsuits of similarly situated people suing the government over certain policies, including on immigration. And this is what happened here in this case. A federal judge in New Hampshire has approved a class certification for newborn babies who would be affected by the president's bid to upend the longstanding interpretation of birthright citizenship by denying it to the children of people who are here illegally, Errol, or on temporary visas. And that means that it has the same effect as a nationwide injunction blocking federal agencies from enforcing the president's proclamation across the board. However, this ruling is stayed for seven days to give the Justice Department time to appeal, Errol. So, we should expect a swift appeal from the Justice Department and the Trump administration. But make no mistake, if this proclamation does get approved by the courts, it would have sweeping implications. A quarter of a million babies are estimated to be born in the U.S. each year to undocumented individuals or to people who are here on temporary visa, Errol. Wow. So, truly, high stakes with this decision. We know the administration is unhappy with the judge calling them an activist judge, so we'll, of course, continue to track all of this. Camilo, thank you.
