A CDC advisory panel has updated its guidance on COVID-19 vaccinations, stating that everyone aged six months and older is eligible to receive a COVID shot after consulting with a healthcare provider. The panel clarified that a prescription is generally not required to receive the vaccine, except in a few states where local pharmacy boards may still mandate it. Most states have reversed such requirements, making access easier.

Insurance coverage for COVID vaccines is expected to continue. Individuals are encouraged to initiate conversations with their healthcare providers, as recommendations may vary. In many locations, including New York, people can receive the vaccine from pharmacists without a prescription.

And should you get a COVID vaccination today, a panel that advises the CDC said in effect, it's up to you. CBS News medical contributor, Dr. Selene Gounder is here now. So Selene, a lot of people watching this CDC meeting, how significant are these changes to the guidance for the COVID vaccine and getting it? So this whole process, the conversation today was very confusing, but here is what we've sort of settled on at the end of the day. So everybody six months and older can get a COVID shot in conversation with their healthcare provider and what their advice is. Now, the healthcare providers may not all recommend that you get one. So you may have to be the one that prompts the conversation that starts that conversation. Secondly, do you need a prescription? The ACIP meeting, which is the advisory group to the CDC says no, that vote failed, the requirement to have a prescription. But some states have boards of pharmacy that do require a prescription. So states like Florida and West Virginia, there's just a couple of those. Most have taken action to reverse that. So most states, you don't need a prescription. Finally, insurance. Insurance should continue to cover COVID vaccines. So I'm older than six months. I wanna get a COVID shot. What do I do? Well, here in New York state, you can walk into a CVS. You can have that conversation with a pharmacist. A pharmacist counts as a healthcare provider. So you can get your COVID shot here.
