We believe it's only the Russians who have the capacity to genuinely help. The breakdown in relations between France and its former colonies after the recent coups in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso and now Niger follows years of devastating attacks by armed groups that weakened democratically elected governments across the region. Maybe after election one, a democratically elected president will arrive, things will change. But what we have to know is really, things completely change. What they did, asking military from France to leave, nobody, any other coming president will take any decision contradictory to what they did, because he will face the population. Until then, many coup supporters here say they will welcome Russian mercenaries to help secure their country. Since the coup in Mali, France and other powers in the West are concerned that former French colonies in West Africa are moving away from their influence. Here in Niger, while sentiments against France is very high, many people want to see the junta steer the nation to the East and align with countries like China and Russia. Analysts suggest France's rift with its allies and former colonies in the Sahel will continue to grow unless they review their strategy in Africa and do so quickly.
