How can a smartphone threaten South Korea's reputation as a global tech hub? The answer is nearly every aspect of our lives, including our financial data, is stored here. A wave of cyber attacks targeting SKT and KT, two of South Korea's biggest telecommunications companies, has exposed just how vulnerable that information really is. In the KT case, the hackers illegally installed a very small microstation and intercepted the traffic of customers using it to steal information. In contrast, SK Telecom's case involved installing malicious software on the server to steal the entire database. Hackers also managed to access about 3 million Lotte credit card accounts and stole data from at least 20 private equity firms. The crisis has shaken public confidence with hundreds of people reporting fraudulent transactions. Just like always after the horse has bolted, both this government and previous ones have been scrambling to put out fires only after incidents occur. Since it's not easy to see whether adequate measures are actually being taken, I feel like they're trying to soothe concerns by offering some benefits, so I don't feel very reassured. To make matters worse, a fire then crippled key state online services, including here at the Seoul government complex. We have digitised government services more than almost any other country, but the infrastructure itself, the main system, shuts down, causing widespread disruption, shock and confusion to people's lives and corporate business. Many government services are expected to remain offline for weeks, prompting an apology from the president. In the information age, national digital infrastructure is a core security asset and the bloodstream that sustains the public's daily life. The government has pledged to spend billions on turning South Korea into a global data centre hub over the coming decade, with a much greater share now expected to be spent on security.
