Alana Beard is a champion, not only on the hardwood but in the hearts of young girls across the nation. Now, the Washington Mystics legend is back in the District and bettering the lives of girls in D.C.

Alana Beard, a Hall of Famer and former Washington Mystics player, has launched the 318 Foundation Sports Champions Academy in partnership with the Mystics. The academy is designed to elevate, educate, and empower young girls in Washington, DC, providing them with basketball training as well as lessons in leadership, mental health, and financial literacy.

The four-day camp brought together fifteen girls from various DC high schools and included participants from Beard's hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana. The program aims to inspire and equip the next generation of female leaders, both on and off the court, by offering free access to high-quality training and personal development opportunities.

She is a basketball Hall of Famer as well as a Washington Mystics Hall of Famer. So the question could be asked, what is she doing here, giving her time and her efforts to DC high school student-athletes? I believe a better question is, why not? I believe our youth are going to be the next leaders of our communities. And it's important for me to pour in what I know, especially for these kids who are craving the information and need the information. So it's to me, it's why not? Alana Beard, the Olympic gold medalist and a forever fan favorite here in the district, is back with a mission. Partnering with the Washington Mystics, she launched the 318 Foundation Sports Champions Academy, a new dynamic program here in DC that is designed to elevate, to educate and to empower young girls from the city. Fifteen girls from various high schools in DC have participated in this four-day camp. We're talking about Coolidge, Georgetown, Dade, Jackson, Reed and Digital Pioneers are amongst the DC high schools represented. The Academy provided free access to a top tier basketball training, plus lessons in leadership, in mental health and financial literacy and owning your power both on and off the card would. Beard and her 318 Foundation team started the Sports Champion Academy in her hometown of Shreveport. They brought five young ladies from Louisiana to DC with them. Fox 5 spoke with campers and whether from down south or here in DC, the message was clear. Learning from the legend Alana Beard and team is a life altering experience. Being able to be around people like that, like it, it's like a sense of like inspiration. So it's it's really an honor. I took away a lot of life lessons, not just basketball lessons that made me better as a person on and off the court. The concepts that you apply outside the court, they work on the court, but also outside, like paying attention to details, listening are skills you need for more than just basketball. Alana Beard made her mark as a Washington Mystic, and now the two are partnering to better the lives of girls right here in Washington, D.C. Kenneth.
