I pledge to work with all my strength for a world without nuclear wars and weapons, as well as eternal peace. Ahead of this anniversary, there were also protests demanding disarmament, especially with growing calls inside Japan to develop its own nuclear deterrent. Japan is surrounded by three nuclear armed countries, China, North Korea and Russia, so I think it's necessary for us to strengthen our defense capabilities to deter the use of nuclear weapons. As with every anniversary, the names of the survivors, known as the Hibakusha, who have passed away, are added to the register at the Cenotaph. Keiko Ogura was just eight at the time, and grew up facing discrimination and survivor's guilt, as well as the fear of the long-term consequences of radiation exposure.
